WebDec 24, 2013 · Higuchi Ichiyo (1872-1896), whom Donald Keene termed the "principal woman novelist of the Meiji period," wrote the novella Takekurabe (given both "Growing Up" and "Child's Play" as titles in English (*)) in the final year of her lamentably brief life, struck down by tuberculosis. WebDespite being busy at the shop, Higuchi didn’t give up on her writing and the neighborhood they stayed in provided the inspiration for many of her subsequent stories, most notably Takekurabe. A coming-of-age novella set in Yoshiwara, it explores the chasm that divides the happy-go-lucky world of children and the careworn existence of adulthood.
