WebNov 18, 2010 · Say the VOES is set at 5 in.hg. That means from 5 in. vacuum to atmospheric (wide open throttle or almost fully open) the ignition is retarded to prevent detonation. Above 5 in. the ignition is advanced. I don't use it because my '72 never had a VOES switch.
