WebAbstract. The average productive lifespan is approximately 3 to 4 years in countries with high-producing dairy cows. This is much shorter than the natural life expectancy of dairy cattle. Dairy farmers continue to cull cows primarily for reasons related to poor health, failure to conceive or conformation problems prior to culling. WebApr 19, 2024 · A cow doesn’t have to be highly productive to stay in the herd. Longevity might simply be due to the absence of problems. Everyone probably has different reasons and different levels of tolerance for culling cows and bulls in their herds. My philosophy is probably a little different, too. Most often, cows are culled for reproductive reasons.
